NCS English Department
The goal of the English Department is to teach students how to read, study, and evaluate a literary work using their Christian worldview. Our courses emphasize four core areas including: written expression, oral expression, the study of grammar, and the study of great literary works. Students begin learning and employing the rudiments of writing in the Junior High years and each year thereafter build upon those skills. Sentence structures and types, various modes of discourse, the multi-paragraph essay, and research papers are taught and practiced at every grade. A myriad of literary works are read and studied as well.
Students do read novels in addition to shorter works found in their literature anthologies. Here are a few of the literary works studied at the various grade levels.
