NCS Elementary Curriculum
K-6th Grade 2007-2008
The elementary school has two campuses located in northwest Phoenix. The main campus is located on 43rd Ave. just south of Bell Road. This campus has multiple sections of each grade level, usually with 25 students per section. The Peoria campus was started in the fall of 1996 at 81st Avenue and Cactus Road. The total enrollment of the elementary is just over 600 students.
Since 1996, the Peoria campus has grown from a K-2 campus to its present kindergarten through sixth grade. There is one class per grade level with a maximum of 18 students in kindergarten and approximately 22 students in first through sixth grades.
The facilities on both campuses include gymnasiums, networked computer labs, and playgrounds, which enhances the educational opportunities for each student. Both campuses offer a hot lunch program. At the Peoria campus students have the opportunity to enjoy the gymnasium for recesses, PE, and lunchtime.
A traditional curriculum is offered to students in kindergarten through the 6th grade on both campuses. Featured in this area is a strong base in phonics, mathematics, writing, history, English and science. Bible study is also a daily activity that begins to build a strong foundation in the Word. Students receive moral and spiritual training through Bible memorization, character development programs, and chapel each week. In addition, classes are offered on a regular basis in art, computers, music, physical education, and conversational Spanish. Fifth and Sixth graders may participate in beginning band.
Parent involvement is an integral part of the elementary school. Parents volunteer time for field trips, aiding in the classroom, helping in the office, serving as computer lab aides, helping with playground supervision and in the lunchroom. There are opportunities to build relationships with other parents through our Parent Action Team (on the Peoria campus) and Moms In Touch (an intercessory prayer group that meets weekly on the Main campus).
School hours are 8:00-3:00 at the main campus. At our Peoria campus, the school hours are from 8:00 until 2:30 to allow travel time for families who may have children attending both campuses.
A half-day kindergarten program is offered at the main campus, while the Peoria Campus provides an all day kindergarten program. The full day class will concentrate on academics in the morning with developmental PE, music, and other enrichment lessons planned for the afternoon.
Curriculum by Grade Level
KINDERGARTEN
Our first focus in Kindergarten is providing a program where “Learning is FUN!” We want our kindergartners to love coming to school. Secondly, we focus on the academics, physical, social and spiritual development. In January our children begin reading books with short vowels. Highlights of the year include… a harvest festival for grandparents, singing Christmas carols at a retirement center, P.E. buddies, Rodeo Day and a musical program.

1st GRADE
First grade is a year for children to blossom in an environment that nurtures academic, spiritual and emotional growth. First grade fun begins in the fall with a Five Senses Picnic and continues throughout the year with educational field trips. Scope of study includes Reading, Story Writing, Hands-on-Math, Bible, Interactive Science and Arizona History. Showered daily with love and encouragement, our students learn the blessings of Godly thinking. If you are looking for a place to “transplant” your youngster, NCS is a great place to put down roots!

2nd GRADE
Each year at Christmas time, the second grade at NCS takes a special field trip to see the Theater Works production of the play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. We have chosen this play because it is humorous, but also shows how the birth of Jesus Christ can change even what may seem to be the most hopeless of lives. The play shows how Jesus can give our lives hope and meaning. The second graders enjoy it every year!

3rd GRADE
Third grade is an exciting place to be. As we move from our science units in invertebrates and vertebrates into the study of habitats, families are invited to join us in San Diego during Spring Break as we board the Floating Lab to study God’s creation in the ocean. In class we are busy “reading” – chapter books and textbooks, “writing” – letters to shut-ins and creating various reports. In “arithmetic” we master math facts and put them to use in word problems and computation. Third grade is a lot of work…and a lot of fun. Join us!

4th GRADE
Fourth grade at Northwest involves many different activities that are interesting…and fun! During the fall, we learn about early American history. This culminates in our Colonial Day celebration with crafts, activities, and cooking from our country’s colonial period. We learn the states and capitals of all the United States and we do state projects on the state of our choice. In February our focus is on the state of Arizona and we take a trip to Goldfield Ghost Town by Superstition Mountain to learn more about Arizona history. Our Science units involve learning about insects, weather, plants, and astronomy…just to name a few. Fourth grade is a year to remember at Northwest!

5th GRADE
What I like about fifth grade…by a group of fifth graders: In fifth grade you get to do a lot of fun things and cool projects. In Science we learn about light, lenses, mammals, rocks, fossils and much more. The field trips are great! fifth grade is a lot of fun because it’s the first year you can choose to be in choir and/or band. Our programs are awesome and we compete with other schools. All the fifth grade classes go to the outdoor science camp at Lake Pleasant for 2 days. We get to be with friends, eat, go to cool classes, eat, play teamwork games, eat, hike and eat some more. We like history because we learn about the past. The country project we do is hard, but we learn to research, take notes, write and stay on schedule. We have an international lunch at the end to celebrate our reports. It’s fun to taste food from 25 different countries. All the fifth grade teachers are really nice. They teach you more things and prepare you for college and the real world.

6th GRADE
Upon entering the sixth grade year, students have a number of activities to anticipate. “Sixth Grade Day” is a day that features moms and dads interacting with their child as we discuss growing up. Construction and launching hot air balloons (8 ft tall balloons made of tissue paper) and dissecting squid make science class exciting. Writing reports allows for creativity, as well as development of research skills. Courses such as art, computer, and Spanish add special interest to the school week. After-school activities include intramural sports for both boys and girls. We end the school year with a “behavior reward party” at Water World!
