NCS  Art  Department

NCS Art classes are taught through Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE), an approach to teaching art that makes use of four foundational art disciplines, art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics, to teach art concepts and skills through a written sequential course of study. This approach, with its balanced content, provides a viable means of presenting interdisciplinary, cross-curricular studies in humanities while helping students develp perceptual awareness, critical thinking skills, and an understanding of art. Throughout this curriculum, students will analyze, discuss, write about, and create art.

Instruction is concept-centered, sequential, and cumulative, and integrates the four art disciplines instead of simply focusing on art production. The making of art is combined with aesthetic perception, critical evaluation, and an understanding of the cultural and historical influences in order for art education to become a meaningful part of the general curriculum.
